Oklahoma City OK Real Estate and General Information
|
|

Are you looking for a home in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma? Realtors, Rick and Nancy Jackson, with years of experience in the area, will be glad to help you.
Oklahoma City is the state's capital and county seat for Oklahoma County. Founded during the 1889 Land Run, the city also extends into Canadian, Cleveland and Pottawatomie counties. Geographically, the city is the nation's 3rd-largest city with 607 square miles of land. Residentially, the city is the nation's 30th-largest city with 537,734 residents as of 2006.
About Oklahoma City
In 1889, the land legally opened up for property ownership and living. On April 22, 1889, the population instantaneously reached 10,000 residents in one day. All the settlers spent nights in tents in what is now the downtown area. Oklahoma City now has a great variety of neighborhoods, where there are condominiums, apartments and single-family homes in the downtown-inner-city area and family homes with larges yards in suburban and rural settings. Suburban areas offer apartment buildings and housing tracts are located around commercial areas. Rural housing is extensive as the city has a great geographic expanse. Economy and Culture
Oklahoma City has an increasingly diverse economy, growing in biotechnology, information technology, health serves and more. Most of the city's great economic growth is due to these booming industries. The city's culture has also attracted a fair amount of tourism. In 2005, the city hosted the 1st and 2nd rounds of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at the AT&T Bricktown Ballpark, welcoming schools such as Southern Illinois University and Saint Mary's College of California. Cultural attractions include the Oklahoma City Museum of Art in the Donald W. Reynolds Visual Arts Center. The museum is home to the world's most comprehensive collection of Chihuly glass, among which is the 55-foot Eleanor Blake Kirkpatrick Memorial Tower. Of course, the Oklahoma City Bombing Memorial is another drawing point as a National Memorial Site and grounds for the famous Survivor Tree.
Education
Within a 50-mile radius of the city, there are 20 colleges and universities including Oklahoma City University in Uptown. The school is renowned for its performing arts programs and has one of Oklahoma's 3 law schools. The University of Oklahoma has campuses throughout the state with 6 medical schools and the nation's largest independent medical center. Other colleges in the area include Oklahoma State University at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma City Community College and Langston University, a historically-black college.
Oklahoma City Public Schools (OKCPS) is the city's largest school district and has plenty of bragging rights. The district operates the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics where some of the state's most gifted math and science students enroll and the Classen School of Advanced Studies, a national Blue Ribbon School, named #17 in the nation by Newsweek. Also in the OKCPS is Belle Isle Enterprise Middle School, which according to the Academic Performance Index is the state's top middle school and has recently received the national Blue Ribbon School Award. The district enrolls over 37,000 students in a great array of high, middle, elementary, charted and alternative schools. |
